Writing

Writing at Our School

At our school, we believe that writing is a powerful form of communication that allows children to express their thoughts, imagination, and understanding of the world. Writing is not just about forming letters and words; it's about telling stories, sharing information, and putting ideas down on paper.

The Importance of Modelling in Writing

One of the key methods we use to teach writing is through modelling. This means that teachers demonstrate how to write by thinking aloud and showing the children the process step-by-step. Modelling helps children understand every stage of writing, from planning and drafting to revising and editing. By seeing the writing process in action, children can learn different strategies and techniques that they can apply in their own writing.

Building on Skills Year After Year

Writing is a journey, and we guide our pupils as they develop their skills throughout their time at school. In the early years, children start with learning basic handwriting skills and forming simple sentences. As they progress through each year, they are introduced to more complex elements, such as using punctuation accurately, expanding their vocabulary, and structuring different types of texts.

By the time they reach higher year groups, our pupils are capable of writing independently and creatively, with a strong ability to convey their thoughts clearly. Our curriculum is designed to build on previous knowledge, ensuring that each year the children learn new skills and concepts that enhance their ability to write effectively.

Writing is an essential part of our curriculum because it helps children express themselves, communicate with others, and succeed in their academic endeavours. Our approach ensures that all pupils become confident writers who enjoy using their skills in a variety of contexts.
